Adrian Harmer
Adrian Harmer was born and raised in Hull , East Yorkshire , a place both literally and figuratively thousands of miles away from the epicentre of Tiki culture. His interest in art was secured at an early age when his father taught him how to draw World War 2 aeroplanes using proper perspective, a skill that would thrill his young classmates. He began to realise that art had the power to make thoughts and dreams real in some way, and also the value of a competent drawing of a Stuka Dive Bomber.
During the mid-90s Adrian became increasingly interested in the popular culture of mid-century America and through his love of the Exotica music of Les Baxter and Martin Denny became aware of the Tiki phenomenon. Captivated by these new found interests and spurred on by the “lowbrow”/Tiki art he was discovering, he started to make paintings that reflected his enchantment with Tiki/mid-century imagery. Much to his delight, he found that this gave him the same buzz he had felt when drawing those aeroplanes all those years ago.
Adrian currently lives in Liverpool with his partner Vikki and their loveable pooch Muttley. You'll often find them relaxing in their home Tiki lounge, where Adrian, a keen experimental mixologist, concocts exiting new beverages with varying degrees of success. As an homage to his Northern roots it is his dream to one day invent a Tiki cocktail that uses a meat pie as a garnish.
